Poovar Island: Where the River Meets the Sea Guide

Escape to the serene beauty of Poovar Island, a hidden gem nestled in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala, India. This tranquil island offers a unique experience where the Neyyar River, the Arabian Sea, and the backwaters converge, creating a breathtaking landscape. Poovar is a perfect destination for those seeking relaxation, natural beauty, and a break from the hustle and bustle of city life. Historically, Poovar was a trading center for spices, sandalwood, and ivory. Legend has it that the name "Poovar" (meaning "river of flowers") originated from the abundance of flowers that once lined the Neyyar River, gifted by Maharaja Marthanda Varma to a visiting saint. While the island's historical significance might not be as prominent as other sites, its natural beauty has always been its defining characteristic. Visitors to Poovar can enjoy a variety of activities. The most popular is a boat trip through the backwaters, offering stunning views of the lush greenery, coconut groves, and the meeting point of the river and sea. You can also relax on the golden sand beach, indulge in Ayurvedic treatments at one of the resorts, or explore the local fishing villages. The island is also known for its delicious seafood, freshly caught and prepared in traditional Kerala style. Don't miss the opportunity to savor the local flavors at one of the waterfront restaurants.
